Birth Control Before The Pill
Birth Control hs been invented in ancient egyptian times. The ancient egyptians used the withdrawl method as well as spermcide, using natrual herbs and oils. Such oils they used consited of mixed acacia leaves with honey or used animal dung that acted as an early form of spermcide. The ancient Greeks also used cedar and olive oil to prevent pregnancy. Most of these forms of birth controls were ineffective but sometimes the proved to be an accurate source of contreception.Condoms were invented around this time also. The condom was made by dired fish intestine or linen. Women in pre-America used homade douches that included but was not limited to herbs, savin and pennyroyal. These early nethods were also not as effective as the pill but acted as another way to avoid pregnacy. In 1839, a man named Charles Goodyear made signficant sources of birth control. He improved condoms making them rubber and made rubber diaphagrams which were more effective than earlier birth control alternatives. This caused alot of illegal sales of controception to prevent pregnancy and him a rich man. In times of the Great Depression, women often used homade douches as descibed before hoping that they would prevent pregnancy, espeially in such economically tough times. Many women couldnt afford diaphagrams or were to embarrsed to get them because of the procedure required to install it. Finally in May,1960 a new and very effective form of birth control was invented and approved by the FDA. This invention was the birth control pill which were basically hormones that tricked the body into thinking it is pregnant. This was such a succes because unlike the condom, the women can take it and no one knew what they were taking and it was very effective. Those are some of the forms of birth control before the Birth Control pill.
